Reference 5004, a modern classic, was launched in 1994 with a production run of about 12 pieces per year. Now discontinued, the model has increased in desirability due to its understated design and pedigree. Deriving its features from Reference 3970, which is descended from the legendary and iconic Reference 2499, Ref. 5004 joins the Patek Philippe family of Grand Complications through its added and highly complex split-seconds chronograph function.
It was superseded by two other split-seconds chronograph models, both with platinum cases: the square-shaped Reference 5951 released in 2010 with in-house caliber CHR 27-525 PS Q, and Reference 5204, released in March 2012 at the Basel Fair with in-house caliber CHR 29-535 PS Q.
Reference 5004 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 312.
