Patek Philippe 5270 Meets Yellow Gold

An amazing perpetual calendar chronograph entered the Patek Philippe ’s complicated watches. The fantastic 5270 series was presented in 2011 and still in production. It marked the first time Patek Philippe made a perpetual calendar chronograph with fully in-house movement. In 2020, another milestone reached the high-end watch market. The Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (ref. 5270 J-001) that comes in yellow gold for the first time ever.

The hue of the dial is perfectly selected to exude the same warmth as vintage Grand Feu enamel dials do. This version of the watch enhances the current collection according to Patek Philippe. To match the yellow gold case, an amazing alligator leather with square scales, hand-stitched, matte chocolate brown.

Case and dial

The silvery opaline dial of the 5270J has yellow-gold leaf hands for the hours and the minutes and applied yellow-gold markers. The apertures for the day, month, leap year, and day/night indicator have subtle inner frames. As with other recent 5270 introductions, the 5270J has a tachymeter scale sandwiched between an inner chapter for the minutes and an outer chapter for the chronograph seconds. The minutes chapter and part of the tachymeter scale are interrupted by the date display at six o’clock, as we’ve seen in recent introductions to this reference as well as in the 5970.

The case design remains the same as previous models from the reference 5270. The only novelty about this modern 41 mm case appears in the material which is now rendered in yellow gold for the first time in the reference 5270. For those that enjoy the traditional, vintage vibe that yellow gold offers, the Ref. 5270J-001 is awesome.

Movement

The Caliber CH 29535 PS Q. Chronograph is the main base for the 5270, one of the most advanced and technically innovative chronograph calibers in existence. It is as good as any movement that Patek created, and its level of finishing is commensurate with what one would expect of a watch of this caliber from a brand of this caliber. This powerful caliber is composed of 456 components, 33 jewels, and operates at a modern 4Hz frequency making it have a power reserve of 55-65 Hours.

The Calibre CH 29-535 PS Q as seen through the sapphire crystal case back. It shows the black polished column wheel cap, the continuous Geneva across the bridges, the polished bevels on the edges, the polished screw heads, the circular grained wheels, the tight and even perlage, and on the gold-filled engravings, among other important parts.

Patek Philippe has now completed every possible color combination for this timepiece, and it seems to signal a possible end of series for the now iconic 5270. Finally, as this is the first and only yellow gold 5270 even though the model is a decade in existence it is probably the rarest execution of this reference.
