Flanking the Chronograph 6238, it is the first Rolex with Cosmograph definition. The advent of this reference brings an important aesthetic innovation, the tachymeter scale is directly engraved on the bezel no longer on the dial, this brings an advantage in terms of readability.

Note to note is that the first models came out with a tachymeter bezel graduated up to 300 units per hours, which was soon replaced by the more common 200 units per hours version.

The chronograph pushers are 24-p3 pump type, and the winding crown is an Oyster Twinlock 600 series. There is also an improvement with regard to the glass: the tropics 21 model is used, which will be mounted on the manual winding chronographs to come.

The movement used is the 72b until 1965 which will be replaced in a very short time by the new caliber 722, from about 1967 until the end of production the new caliber 722-1 will be used.

It is made in steel and gold (14kt and 18kt); initially it mounts two-color dials with contrasting subdials and graphics: in steel the colors are black and silver, in gold the colors are champagne and black.

In 1966, a new type of dial called "exotic" will be introduced for both materials, characterized by special graphics and exclusive color combinations.

In 1965 the words Daytona appeared printed on the dial for the first time, destined to become an icon of world watchmaking.

The name comes from a car race held in Florida where Rolex was the sponsor and official timekeeper.

The inscription, depending on the year of production can be placed at 12 o'clock or above the counter at 6 o'clock. About 1968 the steel model with exotic dial was worn by actor Paul Newman from which its international fame would be born.

Specifically, this model produced in 1967 with serial number 16XXXXX, features an exotic dial named Paul Newman in three colors, black background contrasting white counters red inner scale, Daytona lettering printed in red above the counter at 6 o'clock. Watch with steel case, pump buttons, steel strap, steel bezel and tachymeter scale in black, and Valjoux 722 hand-wound movement. Preserved in Excellent condition.
