Model 3970 was introduced in 1986 and remained in production until 2004, when it was replaced by models 5970 and later 5270. Compared to its predecessor, the adoption of a more modern and refined movement, the caliber CH 27-70 Q based on the Lemania 2310 (the predecessor had a Valjoux base), completely redesigned and perfected by Patek Philippe, should be highlighted.

This also led to a different physicality of the case, whose diameter was reduced to 36 mm, improving its fit. New features included a leap year indicator on the 3 o'clock auxiliary dial and a 24-hour indicator on the 9 o'clock dial. The style of the case echoed that of the 2499, with its downward-facing lugs and pump buttons.

Model 3970E (E for Etanche, meaning water resistant) was produced in yellow, white, rose and platinum gold. The platinum version was available with three different dial options: silver with baton hour markers, black with baton hour markers, and black with diamonds.
