Patek Philippe's Reference 1463, nicknamed "Round Buttons" by enthusiasts, represents a milestone in watchmaking history. Introduced in 1940, it was the first water-resistant wrist chronograph produced by the prestigious Swiss manufacture, distinguished by its innovative round push-button design and case with a screw-locked case back.
Prior to the birth of ref. 1463, Patek Philippe had already explored the world of wrist chronographs with references 130 and 530, both of which featured rectangular pushers and non-water-resistant cases. Ref. 1463 marked a turning point by introducing round pushers, from which the nickname "Round Keys" was derived, and a case with a screw-down case back, providing unprecedented water resistance for the time. Produced until the late 1960s, Ref. 1463 was made in about 750 pieces, mostly in yellow gold. Specimens in rose gold are rarer, while those in stainless steel are extremely difficult to find, with estimates of only 17 in existence. In addition to its distinctive round pushers and water-resistant case, Ref. 1463 features a clean and elegant dial, often with baton hour markers or Breguet numerals.
