In the 1970s, three young watchmakers at Audemars Piguet (Michel Rochat, watchmaker of complications; Wilfred Berney, founder of the After-Sales Service; and Jean-Daniel Golay, founder of the Technical Department), concerned about the quartz crisis, proposed reinventing the perpetual calendar for contemporary wristwatches. After months of research, they presented the project to Georges Golay, then General Director, who requested the production of 159 watches before launch. Launched in 1978, the Model 5548 with Caliber 2120/2800 was at the time the world's thinnest automatic perpetual calendar (3.95 mm). It was a huge success: in 15 years, more than 7,000 watches with Caliber 2120/2800 were produced, in more than 110 different models, nearly 800 of which were skeletonized: the Royal Oak collection took the lion's share, turning precisely the perpetual calendar into its best-known workhorse.
Today, the tradition of Royal Oak perpetual calendars remains alive thanks to spectacular pieces such as the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Skeletonized ref. 26585CE visible in the photo.
An expression of high technical mastery, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Skeletonized has a 41 mm black ceramic case with screw-locked crown, 9.9 mm thick, water resistance to 20 meters. The crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective treatment and the case back is black ceramic. Sophisticated and in some ways unique sapphire crystal dial, with smoked outer zone for counters, black flange, applied hour markers and rose gold Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating.
